Rock chips & small paint loss

Rock Chip & Paint Chip Repair in Charlotte

Paint and rock chip repair

A rock chip is small, but once you notice it you see it every time you walk to the car. Robert touches up chips with color mixed to match your car, right where it's parked.

Rock chips come with highway driving. A truck kicks up gravel on I-77 or I-485, something ticks off the hood, and the next morning there's a white dot in the paint. Leave it, and the exposed spot can start to spread or rust on metal panels.

Chip repair is touch-up work: cleaning the chip, filling it with matching paint, and leveling it so it disappears into the finish. Robert mixes the color on site, the same way he does for bumper repairs.

What chip repair involves

Robert cleans out each chip, fills it with color mixed from your paint code, and levels it so the repair sits flush with the paint around it. The goal is for the chip to stop catching your eye. From a normal distance, it's gone.

Chips on the front bumper, hood edge, and mirrors are the most common. Chips that have already started to lift or spread take more work to stabilize first.

Matching the color

A chip filled with the wrong shade can look worse than the chip. Robert mixes color from an AkzoNobel refinish system, starting from your paint code and tinting as needed, and checks it against the car before it goes on. Read more about how he matches color.

A few chips, or a lot

A handful of chips on a hood or bumper is a straightforward touch-up. A front end peppered with dozens of chips is a bigger decision: touching up every one takes time, and sometimes refinishing the bumper makes more sense. Send a photo and Robert will tell you which way he'd go.

How Robert handles rock & paint chip repair, step by step

  1. Text a wide photo of where the chips are and a sharp close-up.
  2. Robert quotes from the photos.
  3. On the day, he cleans each chip and mixes your color on site.
  4. He fills and levels the chips, then checks them in daylight.
  5. You pay when he's done.

What affects a rock & paint chip repair result

  • How many chips there are and how spread out they are.
  • Whether bare metal or rust is showing.
  • The color. Solid colors touch up most invisibly; tri-coats take more care.
  • Where the chip is. Flat areas hide a touch-up better than sharp edges.

When rock & paint chip repair isn't the right fix

  • A whole hood of road rash that really needs repainting
  • Chips with rust that has spread under the surrounding paint
  • Chips on exotic custom colors

When a whole panel needs repainting, a body shop with a paint booth is the right call. Robert will tell you if that's what the photos show.

How long rock & paint chip repair takes

Chip repair is usually one of the shorter jobs, done well within three hours on site.

Aftercare after rock & paint chip repair

  • Wait at least two days before washing.
  • Hold off on waxing the touched-up chips for about 30 days.

Rock & paint chip repair FAQs

Do you fix rock chips?

Yes. Rock chips are routine touch-up work. Robert fills them with color mixed on site to match your car.

Will the chip disappear completely?

From a normal distance, it should stop catching your eye. Touch-up fills and levels the chip; it isn't a full repaint of the panel.

My hood has a lot of chips. Is it still worth it?

Sometimes. Send a photo of the whole hood. Robert will tell you whether touch-up makes sense or whether the area really needs a repaint.

Can I wash the car after chip repair?

Wait at least two days to wash, and hold off on waxing for about 30 days.
